• Late runs, crowded rakes: Mon blues on Blue Line of Kolkata Metro

  • Kolkata: Blue (North-South) Line metro commuters were on tenterhooks on Monday, given the repeated metro disruptions last week. The authorities tried their best to cope with passenger rush but punctuality issues continued to disrupt services.

On Monday afternoon, some commuters complained of a 20-minute disruption beyond Girish Park, but officials of Metro Railway claimed there was none.

"An operational rectification was done during the non-peak-hour frequency gap on Monday, so that it did not get in the way of normal services and we could ensure there was no disruption," an official said. "I waited for more than 20 minutes for a train to Baranagar. Some passengers spoke of a technical snag, but there was no confirmation at the station.

I waited until the train arrived at 1 pm and boarded one of the coaches, which was crowded," said Angshuman Sarkar, a trader.

Another commuter and Kalighat resident, Sudakshina Mukherjee, said, "Travelling on the Blue Line has become tiresome, now that the festival is approaching and shoppers are boarding crowded trains. The opening of new routes, especially the ones linked to the Blue Line, has affected operations further."

Officials said the delays stemmed from the extra time taken to reverse trains at the old Kavi Subhash terminal because the new terminal (Shahid Khudiram) doesn't have the facility yet. The carrier has taken several measures, like ending 32 services at Tollygunge, so that 64 out of 262 services are spared the time lost on reversal.

The authorities suspended services to the terminal Kavi Subhash station on July 28. The 74 km metro network now ferries around 8 lakh passengers on a weekday. On Sunday, 3 lakh people took the Blue Line, while 90,000 rode the Green Line and around 3,100 travelled on the Yellow Line. On Sunday, digital boards indicating the arrival of the next train went blank in some stations. They were rectified on Monday.
