  • Kolkata: Jadavpur University (JU) on Monday decided to install more street lights on the campus, put proper fencing around water bodies, fix a time until when students can stay on the campus and locate zones where students cannot sit or venture after sunset.

The university has also decided to form a disciplinary committee to ensure the provision of implementing punishments in case of rules are flouted.

The decisions came at an administrative meeting four days after a third-year English department student, Anamika Mondal, drowned in a pond on the campus. The meeting was attended by the pro-VC, registrar, deans, heads of departments, and directors of schools.

Pro-VC Amitava Datta said: "We have decided to increase the lighting of the campus without hampering the environment as the campus is also home to many birds.

We will also put proper fencing around water bodies. The registrar has been asked to develop a comprehensive report on the security system. A committee has been formed to fix the modalities of event timings and bookings of halls for students." Sources said that JU will be appealing for CSR funds from a renowned electrical equipment company as the varsity lacks funds.

A teacher present at the meeting said, "Since a section of students indulge in activities like drinking in certain zones, those areas will be identified and restrictions will be imposed.

The members felt that a time should be fixed, either 9.30 pm or 10 pm, until when students can stay on the campus."

Another professor shared that the hostel boarders will also have restricted movement on the campus after a certain time. "They cannot roam anywhere at their free will," he said. Almost all teachers spoke of the need for a disciplinary committee for students so that there is a provision for implementing punishment in case of "breaking rules and engaging in unlawful activities."

An official said, "JU has a disciplinary committee for teachers and staff but not for students. Hence, we have decided to frame rules and form a disciplinary committee at the university, faculty, and department level so that there is a provision for punishment." According to sources, the meeting also raised the question of who would ensure these rules are enforced.

EC member and English department professor Manojit Mandal requested Datta to form a probe panel to inquire into the girl's death. However, JU will not investigate the matter separately as cops are probing it.
