  • In the aftermath of the alleged stabbing and brutal murder of a student at Dakshineswar station on Friday, the Kolkata Metro Railway authorities have decided to strengthen security arrangements across its network.

The city Metro is to induct 800 additional security personnel to enhance safety measures in its limits.

The stabbing of a school student at the busy Dakshineswar Metro station in broad daylight brought several concerns of safety and security of passengers to the fore. Several commuters, including many women, claimed that they were feeling concerned about their safety after the incident. The authorities of the city Metro are said to have noted the security concerns raised by a section of media and the administration is considering inducting 800 additional security personnel.

Terming the incident as ‘unfortunate,’ the Metro railway office in its statement reiterated that it was a one-off incident involving school-going boys. “Certain instruments/tools within restricted limits are permitted, as a consideration for the large number of working professionals and students using our transport network,” said the statement. The authorities have requested the passengers to follow the security protocols and not to by-pass the door frame metal detectors (DFMDs) and baggage scanners at the Metro stations.

The impact of the incident, resulting in the decision, is visible at Green Line also. The Metro corridor that did not have RPF at crucial stations like Howrah Maidan or even Esplanade is manned by the security personnel now. According to the city Metro office, the movement of passengers is also being closely monitored through the CCTV system from the Central Control Room. Passengers are being frisked and their baggage scanned at the entry points of stations. Suspicious movements or even behaviour of passengers is being keenly observed and responded to by the security personnel.
