Economist and social activist Prasenjit Bose, once a prominent Left student leader at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), formally joined the Congress party in Kolkata on Monday, declaring that he was aligning with the fight to protect the Constitution and the people’s right to vote.
Bose, 51, took the party flag from Congress youth leader Kanhaiya Kumar and received his membership form from West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Shubhankar Sarkar at a ceremony at North Kolkata’s Ram Mohan Mancha. The event was attended by Rajya Sabha member Syed Nasir Hussain, AICC general secretary and state observer Ghulam Ahmad Mir, and other senior Congress leaders.
Bose, who resigned from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 2012, said Congress under Rahul Gandhi had emerged as the true force on the streets. “The biggest challenge before the people is to resist the Special Intensive Revision so that the right to vote is protected,” Bose said.
Hussain, who once faced Bose as a rival during their JNU student politics days, welcomed him into the party.
