Cal HC set to hear pleas against axe on incentives in Nov

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court is likely to take up in Nov multiple petitions against the Bengal govt's decision to discontinue the West Bengal Incentive Schemes.
Several industry majors have moved separate pleas against the decision in the high court, which is likely to hear all the petitions together.
State industries minister Shashi Panja had in March tabled the Revocation of West Bengal Incentive Schemes and Obligations in the Nature of Grants and Incentives Bill 2025 in the assembly.
The bill, which sought to reallocate state funds from financial incentives to social welfare schemes, prioritising the needs of the marginalised, has become law and was published in the Kolkata Gazette on April 2.
During a debate in the Assembly on the bill, CM
had said the incentive schemes came into force in 2001-02, when the state was governed by the Left Front, and it was becoming increasingly difficult to honour the commitments made over two decades ago.
"Even in cases of land acquired during the CPM tenure, our govt is paying compensation. A lot of incentives had been promised without considering the strength of the state exchequer," she had said.
But the companies that have moved court say they are set to lose as the incentives that had accrued are now at risk of being scrapped.
