Kolkata: The state-run Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER) is all set to provide corporate hospital-like facilities in its brand new unit, inaugurated by chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday.
In line with its much-in-demand Woodburn ward, the new G+9 set-up will cater to patients who are ready to cover the expenses. Treatment in this facility can cost anything between Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000 a day for a patient, depending on the cabin type and the medical care required. Exclusively for private treatment, the spacious facility can accommodate around four times more patients than the existing Woodburn ward.
"This new Woodburn building will give competition to private hospitals, and the treatment cost here is the same for all. They fixed the amount at Rs 7,000, but I got it reduced to Rs 5,000. The price you are paying here is much less than what you will pay elsewhere. I will review the rate again after six months. We have named this unit Ananya," Banerjee said during the inauguration of the facility.
The multispecialty facility for private patients has high-end equipment.
All the 131 cabins have modern vital monitoring gadgets. Complete with OPDs on the ground floor and two OT tables on the first floor, the patients will be treated by doctors attached to the hospital. The facility also has investigative facilities.
While the rate of a normal cabin has been fixed at Rs 5,000 a day, the rates for a suite, HDU cabin, and ITU cabin have been fixed at Rs 8,000, Rs 12,000 and Rs 15,000, respectively.
"The same facility would cost anything between Rs 30,000 and Rs 40,000 a day in corporate hospitals," the CM said.
The cost at the Woodburn ward, which has 32 cabins, ranges between Rs 2,000 and Rs 4,000 a day, depending on the cabin type. Sources said that the existing Woodburn ward was high in demand, and at times the hospital was unable to admit patients due to a bed crunch.
The new facility, which is an extension of the Woodburn ward, is situated close to the IPGMER's gate towards the western slope of the AJC Bose flyover.
The govt has invested around Rs 100 crore for this project.
During Tuesday's event, the CM inaugurated and laid the foundation of 18 projects at SSKM. Of these, 15 have been inaugurated at a cost of Rs 162 crore, and the foundation stone has been laid for projects worth Rs 100 crore. "We are also starting a robotic surgical system. This is the first in the govt sector. We are also starting the first bone bank of eastern India," the CM said.
The CM also allocated Rs 10 lakh from the state health department to SSKM as a token of appreciation for the hard work the team has put in to make this institute a Centre of Excellence.
