Kolkata: The detective department of Kolkata Police on Tuesday took over the probe into the death of the Jadavpur University third-year English honours student, who died after falling into a water body on the campus on Thursday night, a day after her parents lodged a murder complaint.
A team from the homicide squad, led by joint CP (crime) Rupesh Kumar, additional commissioner of police (II) Pranav Kumar and DC (south suburban division) Bidisha Kalita, revisited the campus on Tuesday and spoke to multiple witnesses. Police were seen measuring the depth of the water body, where Anamika Mondal's body was found. First, the officers measured the height from the edge of the bamboo barricade to the water's surface, and then, they dipped a bamboo shaft further into the water to measure the depth from the water surface to the base.
"Our officers revisited the spot and took down notes. So far, we have spoken to six friends of the girl. We have asked them about their exact whereabouts on the night of the incident and what they did after the body was discovered," said a senior Kolkata Police officer.
Mondal's parents expressed satisfaction with the investigation and said they had full faith in police. "We completely trust the police investigation.
They promised that I would be informed of every development. Though I haven't received any update yet, I am allowed to call them any time. I did not wish to disturb them, as I feel police should be given time to conduct an investigation. Officers said they would update us once the post-mortem report came," Anamika's father, Arnab Mondal, told TOI.
The bereaved parents, however, seemed upset that neither the university authorities nor their daughter's friends had contacted them.
"Since my daughter's death, neither the university officials nor any of her friends or classmates have got in touch with us. We had often seen her with them, we have photos of them together. Yet, none has reached out to us. This deepens my suspicion that some of them may have had a hand in my daughter's death. We hope the police investigation will reveal the truth," Arnab added.
But he acknowledged that a professor from the English department did express her condolences. "One of my daughter's professors in the English department called and spoke to me for a long time. She told me how fond she used to be of Anamika, admired her academic interest and brilliance, and was touched by some of her writings. The professor had even broken down while speaking to me," Arnab said.
