  • Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday inaugurated Woodburn 2 block ‘Ananyo’ inside the SSKM Hospital complex facing the Victoria Memorial with lush greeneries and Race course along the A J C Bose Road Flyover to provide corporate healthcare facilities for patients, who can afford the charges.

The 10-storied ‘Ananyo’ building, a state health department project of around Rs 67 crore, with 131 cabins will be operational for patients’ indoor admissions and outdoor clinic services, soon.

While inaugurating the project implemented by the state PWD’s civil and electrical wings, the chief minister said this afternoon: “The new Woodburn 2 building will provide modern treatment facilities including critical care on affordable charges. It can also compete with the premier private healthcare units.”

“Our doctors at SSKM Hospital will give treatments to patients at the ‘Ananyo’. Charge for a general bed would be Rs 2,000 per day. We have to raise treatment charges for maintenance of the new facility. Doctors who will get incentives for attending to patients at the new block,” Miss Banerjee who also holds health portfolio said.

“The ten-storied building is equipped with modern healthcare facilities like luxury beds, single cabins and single suits,” she said.

“For single cabin the charge Rs 5,000 daily while it’s around Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 in a private healthcare unit. It will cost Rs 8,000 for a single suit and Rs 12,000 for HDU. Charge for an ITU with other facilities is Rs 15,000,” she said, adding: “It seems difficult to raise maintenance costs of the entire Woodburn 2 unit from treatment charges what we have fixed so far.”

The chief minister also said, “We will see on a review meeting after six months to look into all these issues.”

“Our government has already decided to set up several other high-end healthcare infrastructure facilities like the cancer treatment centre under-construction in collaboration with the Tata Cancer Centre in Mumbai, eastern India’s first bone bank, cord blood bank, new OPD building, robotic surgical system at SSKM Hospital,” she added.

The SSKM Hospital as well as the Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGME&R) will probably be the first ever government hospital to provide corporate healthcare services in a dedicated 10–storied building.

All the government hospitals and medical colleges in West Bengal give free treatment for both indoor and OPD patients. Indoor treatment at the SSKM Hospital’s Woodburn Ward is chargeable only in government healthcare system.

An administrative official said that specialist teaching doctors in different super specialist departments at SSKM Hospital could also attend to patients in the private cabins and they would be given their fees besides their government salary.

The private cabins at the new 10-story building are virtually an extended form of the Woodburn Ward cabins.

The daily charge for a single occupancy large cabin at Woodburn Ward is Rs 4,000 while for a single small occupancy it costs Rs 2,500 per day. For a double occupancy large cabin charge is Rs 2,000. The Woodburn Ward has 35 cabins with three types of bed accommodations.

The daily charges for a single occupancy large cabin is Rs 4,000 while for a single occupancy small it costs Rs 2,500 per day. For a double occupancy large cabin charge is Rs 2,000.

Miss Banerjee also inaugurated several other healthcare projects like expansion of annex building of the Swasthya Bhavan, construction of a new building of the Directorate of Drugs Control etc.
