Kolkata: Fresh spells of rain have compelled the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to push back its deadline for the repair of the city's battered stretches of roads to Sept 18, a day before mayor Firhad Hakim inspects them.
Earlier, the KMC brass set a Sept 13 deadline for the completion of the road repair drive.
"Though we completed the repair work on most of the battered stretches, fresh potholes have developed after recent spells of rain. These will be repaired in the next two days," said a KMC roads department official.
Taking advantage of the earlier dry spell, KMC roads department took up repairs of bad stretches in the north, central, and southern parts of the city.
The civic body selected stretches of APC Roy Road, Chittaranjan Avenue, AJC Bose Road, Strand Road, Beadon Street, BB Ganguly Street, Asutosh Mukherjee Road, Rashbehari Avenue, and NSC Bose Road (Tollygunge), among others. Repairs of some of the bad stretches of E M Bypass, including the part opposite Science City, was also taken up.
According to an official, the KMC also completed or took up repair of stretches in Kankurgachhi, Maniktala, MG Road, Beleghata Main Road, Chittaranjan Avenue, Lenin Sarani, among others.
The recent spells of rain damaged some of the roads in the north and central parts of the city, a KMC official conceded. Constant rain also led to a decline in the production of hot-mix material, needed to fix potholes and repair broken roads, said a senior KMC roads department official.
"We prepared a list of rain-ravaged roads that need urgent attention. We have taken up a special repair drive to take care of the roads that were battered by rain.
The work on the major thoroughfares is nearing completion," said a civic official.
According to a KMC official, the road repair drive will now be centred around the stretches that have developed potholes despite going through repairs. "We will need to take up repair of stretches of APC Roy Road, Vivekananda Road, Chittaranjan Avenue, and Sukeas Street, which were battered by the showers or were left unattended due to rain," said a KMC official.
However, the fate of large parts of roads that fall in the port region, which cry for immediate repair, is yet to be decided as the civic brass wants the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee port authority to wrap up the repair process before pujas. Similarly, the KMC will coordinate with state PWD and KMDA to take up the repair of some roads and bridges that fall under their jurisdiction.
