Kolkata: Duping gullible customers sitting thousands of kilometres away in the US and then buying luxury apartments, new cars, costly watches, jewellery and electronic gadgets — that is exactly how 10 men, nabbed by the detective department for allegedly running an international fake call centre, spent the proceeds from their crimes.
Among other recoveries from the main conspirator, Zawed Khan, cops have seized a villa at Aqua Golf Villa Phase 1, two costly cars — one a Skoda Slavia and another a Mahindra XUV 700 — gold jewellery, Rs 10 lakh in cash, and at least 10 costly watches.
The police operation unfolded after a fraud complaint was lodged at the cyber police station suo motu based on a tip, prompting multiple police teams to conduct raids across Kolkata.
The raids, which took place on Tuesday night, led to the discovery of two apartments at Ideal Heights in Sealdah being used as bases for the fraudulent activities.
The accused reportedly posed as employees of major companies that allow online payment services, letting users send, receive, and hold money electronically in various currencies. The accused made VOIP calls to US citizens, offering false assurances of technical support to commit financial fraud.
Rupesh Kumar, Joint CP (crime & traffic), said: "We conducted operations to catch individuals associated with running fake and fraudulent call centres. The police seized a range of items from the accused, including 10 mobiles, eight laptops (7 of them MacBooks), and an Airtel router from an old residence in Entally. Additionally, we also recovered Rs 10.2 lakh in cash, incriminating screenshots, and three exercise books containing accounts of the scam operations.
The main accused, Khan, was found to have invested heavily in real estate and luxury vehicles."
The police are continuing their investigation to uncover further details about the network and its operations. Lalbazar had recently asked for details of call centre-related cases in each police station area. If a case was filed against any illegal call centre, they have been asked to report the status of the investigation. Sources claim that the police stations are submitting this information to Lalbazar by the end of this week.
