Midnapore: To address disparity in teacher allocation in primary schools, West Midnapore district Primary Education Council on Tuesday reassigned 58 teachers from schools with surplus staff to those with only one teacher.
Citing an example, DPSC chairman Animesh De said Hiradihi-Patharachati Primary School in the district has 36 students, managed by only one teacher, Madhumita Saha. Besides teaching, she also had to manage other school duties, including mid-day meals. Hence, a teacher from Khamarbari TKS Primary School has been transferred there.
A recent report by the state education department highlighted that 2,215 primary schools in the state have zero or one teacher. As many as 227 of them are in West Midnapore.
Akhilbandhu Mahapatra, president of West Bengal Trinamool Primary Teachers' Association, said such transfers were needed to prevent disruption.
