Kolkata: A Trinamool neta was arrested after a video showing him apparently assaulting the acting headmaster on the campus of a state-run school in South 24 Parganas's Kakdwip went viral.
The incident, which took place on Tuesday, involved
panchayat member and Birendra Vidyaniketan management committee president Tridib Barui and acting headmaster Milankanti Pal.
The clash allegedly stemmed from the collection of money from students for school trips without informing the management committee. CCTV footage shared by the school shows Barui pushing and heckling Pal in front of students. According to Pal, Barui told him to sign a document containing false accusations against him.
When the teacher refused, Barui allegedly hit him on the neck and pushed him out of his office. Pal sustained injuries to his hand and neck and was admitted at Kakdwip Superspecialty Hospital.
Barui, on the other hand, said that when he sought a receipt from Pal for the trip money, the teacher pushed him and that he had retaliated in self-defence.
Sharing the CCTV footage on social media,
state president Samik Bhattacharya slammed Trinamool on social media. Reacting to this, Kakdwip TMC MLA Manturam Pakhira said strong action would be taken against Barui if allegations were proven. The role of the acting headmaster would also be examined, he added.
Pal, discharged from the hospital on Wednesday, plans to file a written complaint. Teachers, students and parents have come out in Pal's support.
