Kolkata: Calcutta University observed Wednesday as a normal working day despite it being declared a state holiday for Vishwakarma Puja. But attendance remained low at several departments.
A few departments held classes online.
Departments, such as English, Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian and economics, held their counselling rounds for PG admissions, according to the schedule. A university official said the seats in these departments were filled. The counselling process will continue till Saturday.
Professors pointed out the confusion over the ‘holiday' led to low attendance. Another professor said, "We never had a Vishwakarma Puja holiday, but this time there was confusion as other universities declared a holiday, given the state order.
So many students assumed it was a holiday."
CU registrar Debasis Das said the office attendance was good. CU interim VC Santa Datta De clarified the education department had not sent any instruction to declare it a holiday, and CU being an autonomous institute, certain decisions could be taken.
