Subways, railings proposed to check New Town accidents

Kolkata: Bidhannagar Traffic Police, along with senior officials of NKDA and Hidco, conducted an inspection of the ‘black spots' on the main arterial and interior roads in New Town to address traffic improvement and safety issues on Wednesday.
The team pointed out that the median dividers must have railings to prevent pedestrian crossover, a permanent bus stop should come up at the Shrachi crossing and plastic speed-breakers should be repaired and reinstalled, wherever needed. They also proposed that a few underpasses be built near crossover points, especially at Balaka.
The inspection was conducted following a spate of accidents in New Town. Earlier this month, a 40-year-old techie was killed after a bus collided with her scooter near Biswa Bangla Gate.
Hidco was already working with proposals to set up vehicular subways at different locations on the Biswa Bangla Sarani at Westin intersection, the Seventh Intersection at Shrachi More, Noapara intersection in between Chinar Park and City Centre II along with a vehicular underpass cum pedestrian subway proposal in front of Tata Medical Center and a pedestrian subway in front of St Xavier's University campus.
