Kolkata: A 61-year-old currency exchange vendor, Sk Haider, was assaulted and robbed by four men on Tuesday evening, after being forced off a mini-bus in Maidan on Kidderpore Road.
Haider, a Garden Reach resident, was returning from his currency exchange business and travelling on the Howrah-Metiabruz route when the robbery took place. Haider claimed that he was carrying Rs 5.9 lakh in cash in a bag, along with his mobile phone, when four men boarded the bus near Tea Board.
Haider reported that the men initially provoked him by elbowing him, and when he protested, they became aggressive. "The altercation quickly turned violent as the assailants began assaulting Haider with fists and blows even as other passengers refused to intervene.
Despite attempts to defend himself, the attackers overpowered him, forcibly pulling him down from the bus. In the chaos, the assailants snatched Haider's shoulder bag, which contained his mobile phone and Rs 5.9 lakh ," said an investigating officer.
The attackers then fled the scene and blended into the crowds near the Port area. A passersby spotted Haider in a disoriented state and contacted local authorities for assistance. Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify the four culprits.
