Fliers rush for selfies with PM Modi’s cut-out
The Statesman | 18 September 2025Airport authorities said the rush of passengers eager to capture a moment with the cut-out forced them to set up three separate selfie zones across the terminal. The cut-outs were placed at domestic and international arrival areas as well as the security hold zone. By noon, more than 500 passengers had posed with the Prime Minister’s image, airport sources confirmed. The occasion also marked the observance of Yatri Seva Diwas (passenger service day), celebrated across airports under the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
The day was dedicated to enhancing passenger experience and offering a variety of free services. P R Beuria, airport director at NSCBI, told The Statesman that passengers availed themselves of complimentary health check-ups, including blood pressure, blood sugar, ECG and eye tests. “Over 200 people underwent free eye examinations,” he said. “Passengers took these services during their waiting time before departing for various destinations.”
Children accompanying travellers also took part in a drawing competition and an extempore speech contest, with prizes distributed to all participants. “We are overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response of passengers,” Beuria said.
As part of the day’s activities, elderly travellers and members of India’s Milly Tree Plantation initiative planted saplings in the airport’s arrival garden.
The celebration was reviewed by senior AAI officials, including chairman of AAI, Capt. S K Mallick, executive director (security), along with Dr Beuria. Addressing the gathering, the chairman emphasised that the event was an opportunity to reaffirm AAI’s commitment to passenger welfare.
“Yatri Seva Diwas is an opportunity to showcase AAI’s efforts in delivering safe, secure and world-class services across our airports,” the chairman said, highlighting passenger-centric initiatives.
Meanwhile, NSCBI Airport is gearing up for another milestone on Thursday. Star Airlines is set to commence its maiden flight between Kolkata and Purnia. Airport director Mr Beuria will formally inaugurate the service.
