In a landmark development for maritime infrastructure, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port on Monday signed a concession agreement with JSW Infra Ltd. for the mechanisation and modernisation of Berths 7 and 8 at Netaji Subhas Dock (NSD) under the Kolkata Dock System (KDS).
The ceremony took place in the presence of Rathendra Raman, chairman, SMPK, Devki Nandan, director, JSW Infrastructure Limited, Samrat Rahi, Dy chairman, SMPK, along with all heads of departments of KDS and the team members of JSW Infra Ltd.
The concession agreement involves reconstruction of berth 8, mechanisation of berths 7 and 8 by installing rail-mounted quay cranes (RMQC) to facilitate faster handling of container cargo along with a back up area of 25 acres and operating the berths for 30 years. The terminal is set to have a capacity of 5 lakh TEUS and the total project cost is of Rs 740 crore.
On this occasion, chairman Rathendra Raman highlighted that the mechanisation of these key berths underlines SMPK’s commitment towards strengthening port infrastructure and enhancing trade facilitation in line with the central government’s vision for modern, world-class ports.
