Kolkata: Kolkata's ghats have been designated as a "no-plastic zone" following an order from the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, formerly known as the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) and the current custodian of the ghats, is implementing the directive.
Port authorities have installed notices at the ghats to discourage littering of the riverbanks with plastic.
Samrat Rahi, deputy chairman of SMP, Kolkata, said, "Everyone is concerned about the plastic pollution. The notices that we have put up is to make the public aware that they should not dump any plastic waste near the river."
Rahi further added, "As you know we have undertaken an elaborate project for the development of the ghats.
While doing so, we are also ensuring the protection of most of the ghats. We are also trying to make sure rehabilitation and refurbishment work around the ghats." Seven ghats are scheduled for renovation under the port-led riverfront revival project. The ghats selected for redevelopment include Mayer Ghat, Surinam Ghat, Nimtala immersion ghat, Chhtelal Ki Ghat, Daighat, Kumortuli Ghat, and Champatala Ghat.
Additionally, the riverfront stretch between Kumortuli and Champatala ghats will be beautified.
The State Municipal Corporation of Kolkata (SMK) has also initiated the development of a 1km bank along the Jorabagan stretch.
Rahi pointed out, "As part of the ghat development project, the priority is to make the areas free of plastic. KMC, Kolkata Police and the other state agencies have come together along with KoPT to make this a reality. Several corporate entities have joined us in the initiative."
He added that the bank protection work along the one km Jorabagan stretch undertaken by Kolkata Port will revitalise that section of the bank. "It will go a long way in enhancing the riverfront," Rahi said.
