• Cops attacked while dispersing armed group in Netaji Nagar

  • Kolkata: Two Kolkata Police officers — an SI and an ASI — were allegedly assaulted at Netaji Nagar in south Kolkata while trying to nab some goons for causing a disturbance outside a lawyer's residence.

    Several women, all aides of the main accused, also attacked the cops. Later at hospital, the accused attacked both cops and Baghajatin Hospital nursing staff with scissors before being subdued.

    The incident unfolded late on Wednesday night when Netaji Nagar PS received reports of a gathering of 8-10 miscreants in front of the house of Dipayan Ghosh, a lawyer and youth president of the Trinamool Congress in ward 99.

    The group, allegedly armed with knives and other weapons, issuing threats to Ghosh for reasons that are being probed.

    SI Dinabandhu Kesh and an ASI from were sent to the scene. However, upon their arrival, the tension escalated as the goons attacked the officers. The assault left Kesh in need of immediate medical attention. The ASI, too, had to be rushed to the hospital. "Cops later arrested six, including main accused Jayanto Ghosh," said DC (south suburban-Jadavpur) Bidisha Kalita. The situation deteriorated when the accused were taken to Baghajatin Hospital for medical examination as Jayanta allegedly attacked an officer and even the nursing staff with surgical scissors.
