Kolkata: The rape survivor from the law college in south Kolkata has decided not to continue her studies at the institution. Sources said she has applied for a no-objection certificate from the college, which has been granted, and the matter is now awaiting final approval from Calcutta University.
The first-year student was gang-raped on campus by contractual staff member Monojit Mishra and his aides on June 25. Recently, her parents met college vice principal Nayna Chatterjee and sought her transfer to another college as "she was unable to study there".
Her father told TOI, "We want her to pursue her career, but we don't want to send her back to that campus. She is gradually recovering from the trauma. We want her to return to a normal life and attend classes regularly but not on that campus.
I met the college principal, and she cooperated during this tough time. After the final approval from CU, we will proceed further." The survivor is currently continuing her studies from home attending online tuitions, but her family feels that she should return to a classroom.
When TOI tried to get a reaction from Chatterjee, she said, "As the matter is pending before court, I will not comment."
Calcutta University's interim VC, Santa Datta De, said, "We received a letter from the family requesting a change of college.
We are looking into the matter and will do the needful." While Datta De said she would be transferred to one of the govt-aided colleges affiliated with CU, she refused to name the college.
Usually, there is no provision to change institutions mid-semester, but this case is rare in nature. The university maintained extreme confidentiality when the survivor appeared for her first-semester examination, making separate arrangements to provide her with an atmosphere where she could write her exams peacefully. According to sources, the transfer may be completed before the puja break or immediately after that.
A CU official said, "The matter is sensitive, and our priority is to ensure that her identity remains confidential. It is our duty to provide her with the best possible atmosphere so that she can regain her confidence."
