Kolkata: A Kakdwip subdivisional court on Thursday granted bail to Birendra Vidyaniketan management committee president Tridib Barui, who was arrested only 12 hours earlier for assaulting acting headmaster Minalkanti Pal.
Collection of money from students for school trips without informing the management committee allegedly triggered the assault on Tuesday. Images of Barui, a Trinamool panchayat member, assaulting Pal were captured in CCTV footage.
After the attack, Pal fell ill and was admitted to Kakdwip Sub-Divisional Hospital. He lodged a formal complaint with cops after his release on Wednesday morning.
Barui was charged with voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation under BNS, which are all bailable.
Kakdwip SDPO Prosenjit Banerjee said: "The charges were applied strictly on the basis of the complaint received."
Calling the bail "unexpected", Pal said: "It seems the charges were framed in such a way that bail could be secured. If Barui continues as president of the managing committee, I fear he may repeat such behaviour. He is influential. It is truly unexpected that he got bail so quickly."
Many parents and guardians also voiced concern, saying the incident may set a dangerous precedent and could embolden similar acts in the future.
