  • Kolkata: Bengal is one of the top priority states for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), stated Indra Mani Pandey, secretary general of the inter-govt organisation, which acts as a bridge between South Asia and Southeast Asia.

Pandey, who was one of the speakers at the 3rd edition of the Indo-Pacific Economic Conclave organised by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Thursday, stated that regional cooperation in promoting intra-regional trade and investment remains a high priority under BIMSTEC.

According to Pandey, the organisation achieved maritime connectivity while negotiations for road connectivity are underway among seven countries like India, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, and Bangladesh.

"The BIMSTEC master plan for transport connectivity, which was adopted three years ago, is under implementation. Development of a plan of action for connectivity is also underway. The Motor Vehicles Agreement that we are negotiating now will facilitate land connectivity among the member countries," he said.

Rajesh Pandey, additional chief secretary in the state MSME department, said, "The state govt is trying to grow sectors like leather, textile, tourism, gems and jewellery and engineering that generate employment. We are also looking for investments and partnerships from the BIMSTEC member countries."
