• Howrah dump yard bio-mining picks up pace
    Times of India | 19 September 2025
  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has ramped up bio-mining operations—being done in three zones—at Belgachia Trenching Ground in Howrah, aiming to clear decades of legacy waste and reclaim the sprawling dumpsite by 2026.

The move comes in response to directives from the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which flagged the site as an environmental and disaster risk zone following a major slope failure earlier this year. After completing its work, KMDA has handed over Zone-III—reclaiming 1.79 acre—to Howrah Municipal Corporation for setting up a bio-gas plant. However, green crusader Subhas Datta said, "The authority must find an alternative site for dumping fresh waste after proper segregation. Otherwise, the problem will never be fully resolved."

In an affidavit filed before the NGT, KMDA said it engaged Jadavpur University (JU) to conduct soil testing and topographic surveys of the site and nearby slums to assess slope stability. JU submitted its reports, which are under scrutiny.
