• Pvt firms to take up ghat renovation

  • Kolkata: In a bid to restore Kolkata's riverfront, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) has planned a redevelopment project as part of its CSR programme with various private organisations, including Adani Ports, SEZ Ltd, GRSE Ltd, PS Group, IHCL Group (Taj Hotels), and TNS Logi Park Pvt Ltd.

    The plan involves conversion of the areas into a vibrant recreation and entertainment zone for both citizens and tourists.

    On Thursday, SMPK, Kolkata Police and several of the private firms, inspected two prominent ghats. "These inspections are pivotal in ensuring there are no on-ground stumbling blocks when work begins," said a DCP who was present at the inspection.

    While Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd may beautify the riverfront between Kumartuli Ghat and Champatala Ghat, GRSE Ltd may work on Bagbazar Mayer Ghat and Surinam Ghat. PS Group has adopted Nimtala ghat and IHCL Group may take up in Chotelal Ghat. Daighat will be redeveloped by TNS Logi Park Pvt Ltd.

    But cops have raised concerns regarding development of Kumartuli Ghat, suggesting the need for an alternate route for Posta-bound trucks.
