Kolkata: A man posing as a senior police inspector was accused of extorting money from traders in New Market, Burrabazar, and Girish Park. The imposter allegedly went on a shopping spree before Durga Puja, buying clothes and electronic items worth several thousands before demanding money from shop owners by pretending to be a senior cop.
The incident came to light when a trader, who owns a tailoring shop on Nando Mallick Lane, filed a formal complaint. According to it, the suspect arrived at the shop on a bike conspicuously marked with the word "Police". The man then claimed that the shop had failed to return his tailored pants and intimidated the shop owner into handing over Rs 5,000.
The victim reported the incident to Girish Park cops. However, only a general diary entry was recorded, and no FIR was filed initially.
The victim then approached senior cops at Lalbazar, following which an FIR was drawn up.
The shop owner provided cops with video and photographic evidence that allegedly captures the suspect in the act. Despite this, cops have yet to make any arrest or take significant steps to apprehend the individual, the trader claimed.
Prodded by Lalbazar, Girish Park police have launched a probe, reviewing CCTV footage from the area. The incident has sparked outrage among local traders, who are calling for swift action to prevent repeat occurrences of such fraudulent activity. The police have also warned traders not to blindly trust customers.
