Extended repair deadline ends, mayor to survey city roads today

Kolkata: A day before Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim's scheduled survey of the city's roads, the KMC roads department wrapped up its road repair drive on Thursday. The deadline for the drive was extended to Sept 18 due to continuous rain.
According to a KMC official, barring a few stretches in the added areas, like Behala, Garia, and areas off E M Bypass, the special drive was complete.
"We conducted patchwork on the roads that were waterlogged and developed potholes in the past one and a half weeks. However, continuous rain posed a challenge. Though we managed to take up work on most of the roads, some stretches might have been left unattended. These will be taken care of before pujas," said an official.
According to a KMC source, the drive was largely concentrated on roads that lead to popular pujas. "From Tala to Tollygunge, we repaired more than 200 stretches of major thoroughfares that are heavily used by motorists during the festival," said an official. Among roads that were taken up for repairs were APC Roy Road, Vivekananda Road, AJC Bose Road, Beadon Street, Chittaranjan Avenue, Strand Road, Bidhan Sarani, College Street, BB Ganguly Street, Asutosh Mukherjee Road, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Road, Deshapran Sashmal Road, Prince Anwar Shah Road, and NSC Bose Road.
However, the repair drive in large parts of roads in the port region is ongoing. "We know the condition of Coal Berth Road, Circular Garden Reach Road, Taratala Road, and Paharpur Road, which fall under the jurisdiction of KoPT, is deplorable. Though the port authorities have started a repair drive, it may take some time to fix the battered stretches," said an official.
Similarly, roads in large parts of Behala that were dug up for a drainage upgrade project under KEIIP will take some time to be repaired, said a civic official.
Residents of large parts of Behala have been complaining about inaction in repairing stretches lying dug up for long. "We can't assure them that the roads will be repaired until the project is over. Let the KEIIP wrap up the project and hand over the roads to us," said a KMC official.
Some of the areas where the roads are in a sorry state include Motilal Gupta Road, MG Road, Kalipada Mukherjee Road, Biren Roy Road (West), and parts of Diamond Harbour Road.
"We are trying to repair the worst stretches as soon as possible," said a KMC official.
