  • In a landmark achievement for the region, Dr Neela Bhattacharya has been conferred the prestigious Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow (FRCS), becoming the first female surgeon from north Bengal to receive this international honour.

Currently serving as project director of the Smile Train programme at a private hospital, Siliguri, Dr Bhattacharya has performed over 5,000 cleft lip and palate surgeries free-of-cost for children from north Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. Her work has brought life-changing treatment to underprivileged patients across borders. A recipient of the “50 Women Transforming India” recognition jointly awarded by the Prime Minister’s Office, the United Nations and NITI Aayog, Dr Bhattacharya was earlier felicitated by the then President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, and the Ministry of Child and Family Welfare. She is also associated with the West Bengal government’s Sishu Sathi and Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) schemes.
