In a surprising development, members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), a Left-wing students’ organisation, and representatives of the Adivasi Kurmi Samaj appeared for interviews to select Congress spokespersons for south Bengal.
Forty shortlisted candidates were interviewed today by AICC spokesperson Anshuman Sain and Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) spokesperson Chandan Ghosh Chowdhury. The aspirants came from districts, including East and West Burdwan, Birbhum, Bankura, Purulia and Jhargram.
Debesh Chakraborty, West Burdwan district Congress president, explained: “The initiative, titled Mukhopatra Sandhan, involved shortlisting participants after telephonic discussions and reviewing video clips that they were asked to submit earlier. In Bengal, our party has launched this pioneering effort today.”
Tanmoy Haq, an SFI cadre, who took part in the “talent hunt”, said: “I think the time has come for the youth to strengthen the Congress, as this party alone maintains an independent, democratic and liberal identity today.”
Nripen Mahato, a Kurmi Samaj member from Purulia, added: “The Congress has changed a lot over the years. Rahul Gandhi’s tireless efforts to bring about change have inspired me to join the party today.”
Pradesh Congress president Subhankar Sarkar and his team had posted several video messages on social media inviting young people to participate. According to party leaders, the AICC instructed the PCC to identify young leaders who could serve as district spokespersons.
The Congress organised the “talent hunt” in Durgapur today to find suitable spokespersons for six South Bengal districts. The party, which had once allied with the Trinamul Congress to end the 34-year Left Front rule, later joined hands with the Left Front in 2016 in a bid to unseat the TMC government in Bengal.
