Kolkata: With craters and potholes in many places, motorists may face a bumpy ride during pandal-hopping in Salt Lake. Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation is conducting patchwork repairs but, with the block community pujas set to be inaugurated one after another next week, the civic body has hardly any time to cover all the battered stretches.
There are a number of crowd-pullers in Salt Lake, like FD Block, BJ Block, AK Block, and AE Block Part I. Cops said managing the huge vehicular traffic will be a hard task given the present condition of roads in many places.
In some places, large craters and potholes cover almost two-thirds of the road width. On Friday, TOI spotted a stretch in front of Bidhannagar North PS where patchwork repairs are going on. Many of the stretches had been repaired earlier this year.
Some roads inside the blocks are also lying battered, without repairs taken up for years. Some of the bad stretches include the Tank 13-bound road from Anindita bus stop, the stretch connecting GD Island to Broadway Road, and the First Avenue stretch near Baisakhi.
Bidhannagar traffic police have repeatedly informed the civic body about the bad condition of roads. "On many stretches, the top layer has broken up, and craters have emerged in places where patchwork was recently done.
BMC said repairs were affected due to rains," an officer said.
"Roads in Salt Lake get damaged in a short span of time. BMC should look into the quality of materials before using them for repairs," said Dipanwita Bakshi from BL Block.
"Just patching up the damaged spots is of no use. Craters have again developed," said Ritesh Basak, secretary of Association of Bidhannagar Citizens, a people's forum.
BMC officials said the condition of roads deteriorated in many places due to heavy rain. "Patchwork is being conducted to repair the most damaged stretches," said a civic official.
