BJP worker brutally murdered in his Nadia home, TMC denies links

A BJP worker was dragged out of bed and bludgeoned to death inside his own home at Prachin Mayapur in Nabadwip on Vishwakarma Puja night, in an attack that has reignited the bitter feud between the ruling Trinamul Congress and the BJP in Nadia district.
The victim, identified as Sanjay Bhowmik (39), was assaulted with rods and sticks, his head smashed against a wall, and left to bleed through the night, police and local sources said. Family members alleged that the attackers stood guard outside his house until morning, preventing anyone from taking him to hospital. By the time Bhowmik was taken to Nabadwip State General Hospital on Thursday, doctors pronounced him dead.
Four men – Joy Roy, Tarak Das, Tapas Das and one “Chhotto” – have been named in the police complaint. Of them, Tarak Das is a former driver of the Nabadwip MLA. All the accused are absconding, police confirmed.
“This was a cold-blooded murder carried out by Trinamul-backed goons. They broke into his home, dragged him from his sleep, and killed him only because he was a BJP worker,” alleged BJP leader Shashadhar Nandi.
The ruling party, however, has denied the charge. Biman Saha, chairman of Nabadwip Municipality and a Trinamul leader, said: “The accused are not connected with our party. BJP is trying to disturb the peace by politicising the incident. One of the accused may have driven the MLA’s car years ago, but he no longer works for him.”
The gruesome killing has triggered widespread tension in Nabadwip’s Ward 6 and surrounding areas, where police patrols have been intensified. The fact that the incident occurred during Vishwakarma Puja, when festive gatherings kept the town occupied, has further rattled residents.
When asked, Deputy Superintendent of Police Debasis Chatterjee said, “Raids are continuing, but no accused has been arrested yet.”
With both parties trading blame, the murder of Sanjay Bhowmik has once again laid bare the volatile political landscape of Nadia, where clashes between BJP and Trinamul supporters have frequently turned violent in recent years. With Assembly elections scheduled next year, the incident is expected to magnify the animosity between the two leading rival parties in the district.
