• Elias Frank takes charge as new Archbishop

  • Kolkata: His Holiness Pope Leo XIV accepted the resignation of Archbishop Thomas D'Souza from the pastoral governance of the Archdiocese of Calcutta on Saturday. This marks the end of his distinguished service as the Archbishop of Calcutta.

    According to Canon 409 § 1 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law, Coadjutor Archbishop Elias Frank has now become the 10th Archbishop of Calcutta. Describing himself as a true "Bangla premi", Archbishop Elias Frank said he began learning Bengali as a student. "My first priority will be to visit all the parishes and religious institutions," he said.

    A thanksgiving mass will be held on Sept 28, at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary, which will be presided over by Archbishop Elias Frank and concelebrated by His Excellency Most Rev Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio; Archbishop Emeritus Thomas D'Souza; and the regional bishops, together with the deans, provincial and parish priests, religious brothers and sisters, and lay representatives from across parishes.
