Kolkata: More than 200 students from West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences staged a protest and gheraoed vice-chancellor Nirmal Kanti Chakrabarti in his chamber till late on Saturday, demanding his resignation following a Supreme Court judgment.
Chakrabarti reportedly later met senior faculty members and student representatives but declined to step down.
The SC, while dismissing a sexual harassment complaint against the VC, citing delay in filing beyond POSH Act's deadline, directed that the judgment be included in the VC's resume, serving as a permanent record of the allegation.
NUJS students, in a statement, said, "Our protest is not an isolated reaction to a single incident.
It is a collective cry born out of months, even years of silence, frustration and disappointment. It is an action born out of desperation, post the grave allegations of sexual harassment levelled against the VC... the lack of financial transparency and the systematic pattern of administrative failures, persistent apathy and growing disconnect between the administration and its students and faculty members."
Representatives of the students' body submitted a letter at the general council (GC) meeting on Saturday, demanding an immediate executive council (EC) meeting and Chakrabarti's removal.
Chief Justice of India B R Gavai, also the chancellor of WBNUJS, ministers, senior advocates, SC and HC judges, heads of other institutes and NUJS EC members are members of the GC.
"The demand for an immediate EC meeting was rejected on the grounds that a proper notice was not issued. The GC disregarded the urgent and serious nature of the allegations," said a student. An official said given "students' loss of faith in the leadership", GC had requested that an EC meeting be held, following the protocol.
"Justice Dipankar Datta and another SC judge represented the CJI at the meeting," said a campus insider. "Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya and EC members were there, while law minister Moloy Ghatak attended the meet online."
VC Chakrabarti did not respond to TOI's calls and texts.
Students from Hidayatullah National Law University, Gujarat National Law University and National Law University Delhi expressed solidarity with NUJS students.
