Rain brings Kolkata Municipal Corporation repair vans out on road

Kolkata: A day after Mayor Firhad Hakim surveyed city roads, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) roads department on Saturday decided to press seven of its mobile road repair vans into service round the clock, fearing possible damage amid rain alert during the festive period.
These vans will also do the rounds in front of crowd-pulling pandals.
"We took up all major thoroughfares for a patchwork repair drive, keeping an eye on Durga Puja. But the daylong rain across the city may damage the roads that were brought under the repair drive. We will send our mobile vans to vulnerable spots," said a senior KMC official.
The civic official said any citizen can lodge a complaint via WhatsApp (8335999111) with an appeal for the repair of roads.
"The message will reach the mayor's office, and the KMC roads department will send a mobile road repairing van to the affected area within 24 hours," said a KMC official.
According to the official, the civic body may deploy more such vans during the next monsoon.
Another KMC roads department official said the civic body was focusing on Diamond Harbour Road, especially in the Kidderpore-Ekbalpore belt, Chittaranjan Avenue, Canal West Road, Beliaghata Main Road, Maniktala Main Road, MG Road, and stretches on EM Bypass.
However, the repair drive is still being carried out in the port area. "Coal Berth Road, Circular Garden Reach Road, Taratala Road, and Paharpur Road, which fall under the jurisdiction of KoPT, were in a deplorable state. Though the port authorities have started a repair drive, it may take some more time to take care of the battered stretches on the major roads under their jurisdiction," said the senior official.
