The Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate (ADPC) has announced a comprehensive traffic management master plan to regulate the movement of heavy goods and commercial vehicles on national highway 19, between Barakar and Budbud, from 25 September onwards. The initiative aims to ease congestion during Durga Puja.
The ADPC jurisdiction covers the Asansol Sadar and Durgapur sub-divisions of West Burdwan district.
Commissioner of police Sunil Kumar Choudhury stated, “Durga Puja is just days away. To ensure smooth traffic management, the police administration has initiated extensive preparations. The ADPC has formulated several plans to maintain uninterrupted traffic flow.”
A high-level meeting was convened at the DCP (Traffic) office, chaired by DCP (Traffic) PVG Satish. Senior officers from all traffic guards, OCs of police stations under ADPC, and local transport owners and operators participated. The meeting focused on controlling heavy vehicle movement and enforcing ‘No Entry’ restrictions during Durga Puja and Mahalaya.
Following the meeting, the DCP (Traffic) confirmed that from 25 September to 5 October, heavy vehicles heading towards Kolkata will be barred from operating within the ADPC area between 12.30 p.m. and 2.30 a.m. the following day. Only vehicles travelling via Bombay Road and Dankuni, bearing B or D stickers, will be permitted.
Exemptions will apply to vehicles transporting essential goods such as milk, vegetables, LPG, and CNG.
On Maha Ashtami (30 September), when Kumari Puja is observed, restrictions will be in place from 5 a.m. until 2.30 a.m. the next day. For Mahalaya (21 September), heavy vehicle movement will be controlled from early morning until noon. Similar restrictions will be enforced during Lakshmi Puja on 7 and 8 October, from 12.30 p.m. to 2.30 a.m.
Vehicles entering West Bengal from Jharkhand will be intercepted at the Duburdih check post on the Bengal–Jharkhand border during these periods.
Transport operators have been advised to avoid operating heavy vehicles carrying sand, coal, or other non-essential materials unless absolutely necessary. The administration will establish multiple restriction points, equipped with toilets and food facilities in coordination with local authorities. Transport owners have also been requested to arrange food provisions for drivers and assistants during the restricted days.
For traffic-related emergencies, the control room helpline—8116604402—will remain active.
On average, 20,000 to 25,000 vehicles pass through the Duburdih check post daily. In addition to NH-19, heavy vehicles also enter West Burdwan from neighbouring districts such as Birbhum, Bankura, and Purulia via other routes.
