  • Senior citizens and elderly residents took to the streets of Serampore last Friday under the banner of Baji o DJ Box Birodhi Manch, to raise awareness about the harmful effects of DJ sound systems and loud firecrackers. The demonstrators carried placards and banners, and distributed pamphlets urging the public and authorities to take action against the illegal use of high-decibel sound systems and explosive devices.

Goutam Sarkar, secretary of the organisation, stated that according to a ruling by the apex court, DJ sound boxes and loud firecrackers are prohibited. While sound systems are permitted during certain festivals — such as Kali Puja, Diwali, Chhath Puja, Christmas, and New Year celebrations—they must be used within restricted hours. However, many continue to flout these regulations during social functions, processions, and religious festivities. “We demand strict enforcement of the prohibitory orders by the administration,” Mr Sarkar said.

Dr Pradeep Das, president of the Serampore branch of the Indian Medical Association, warned that loud DJ music and firecrackers can trigger cardiovascular stress in older adults, leading to elevated heart rate and blood pressure.
