Tension gripped a neighbourhood near Durgapur Steel Township this evening following the mysterious death of a Trinamul Congress leader at his garden bungalow.
Nikhil Nayek, 63, had served as the trade union leader of the party’s unorganised workers’ wing for two decades. He had contested the 2002 Durgapur Municipal Corporation elections as a TMC candidate but was defeated. Nayek was tasked with organising trade union units among unorganised labourers in the secondary steel units of the Kamalpur industrial zone, as well as among gravel mine workers in the region.
His body was discovered hanging from the staircase railing of his residence in Parulia, approximately 4 km from the township. Police recovered the body and have initially suspected suicide. Investigators also questioned Nayek’s younger brother, who joined the BJP in 2019, in an effort to determine the motive behind the suspicious death.
