Two separate accidents in Madhyamgram and New Town on Monday left two people dead, triggering public anger and police investigations. In Madhyamgram, a 52-year-old scooter rider was killed after being run over by a government bus on Jessore Road. The incident occurred in the morning near the Vivekananda College bus stop. Police said the victim, identified as Nibaran Das of Kailasnagar in Hridaypur, Barasat, lost control when his scooter skidded on the road. Eyewitnesses reported that Das, who was wearing a helmet, was flung onto the road. A state-run bus following him braked hard but failed to avoid hitting him. Das was rushed to Madhyamgram Rural Hospital, where doctors declared him dead from excessive bleeding. His death led to unrest in the area as angry locals surrounded the bus. Police later detained the driver.
The stretch of Jessore Road has seen multiple accidents in recent months. Last month, a vegetable-laden truck rammed into a roadside tea stall in Madhyamgram, injuring several people. In July, a young man was killed after being hit by a vehicle on the same road. Meanwhile, in New Town, police recovered the bloodied body of an unidentified youth near Tank No. 11 in the Eco Park police station area. Residents discovered the man lying on the road early Monday and alerted authorities. The body was sent for post-mortem after doctors confirmed his death. Police registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation.
Investigators said the youth might have died in an accident but are not ruling out foul play. Officers are probing whether the death was linked to recent thefts reported from a nearby workers’ housing complex, where laborers from Burdwan had complained about stolen mobile phones and cash. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to determine if the youth was assaulted before his death.
