As Durga Puja draws closer, the likelihood of rain continues to rise in South Bengal, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of rough seas and heavy showers later this week.
The sky of Kolkata on Monday is covered with clouds. According to the Alipore weather office, the Bay of Bengal is likely to see a low-pressure system form two days before Sasthi, increasing the chances of rainfall during the Puja period. From Thursday, or Tritiya, seas are expected to turn turbulent, prompting authorities to caution fishermen against venturing out. Heavy rainfall is forecast in at least four districts — South 24-Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore and Jhargram — on Monday and Tuesday.
Kolkata and other districts may experience scattered thunderstorms and rain from Monday through Thursday, accompanied by lightning. In north Bengal, conditions appear calmer, with only light, isolated showers expected in a few places. No weather alerts are currently in place for northern districts from Monday onward. The IMD has also issued a warning of squally weather along the West Bengal and Odisha coasts of the north Bay of Bengal from Thursday, with wind speeds reaching 45 kmph or higher.
Fishermen have been advised to stay ashore that day. Meanwhile, Kolkata continues to reel under hot and humid conditions. On Monday, the city recorded a minimum temperature of 27.1 degrees Celsius, 0.8 degrees above normal, while Sunday’s maximum stood at 33.2 degrees Celsius, 0.4 degrees above normal. High humidity levels — peaking at 97 percent — kept discomfort levels elevated. Meteorologists said Kolkata is likely to see muggy weather with intermittent rain until Thursday, offering brief relief from the sweltering heat but little respite from humidity.
