  • Kolkata: A constable on night duty died in New Town on Sunday night after being hit by a motorcycle, allegedly driven by a 16-year-old boy without a licence. The incident marks the fourth fatal accident in the area in less than three weeks.

    Three of them involved bikes.

The accident took place around 10:30 pm on the service road of Biswa Bangla Sarani. Police said constable Jyotish Debnath, 40, posted at Eco Park police station, was standing with his bicycle near Gate No. 2 when the motorcycle, travelling towards Chinar Park at high speed, lost control and struck him. Another constable on patrol with him also suffered injuries.

The biker, identified as a 16-year-old resident of Jatragachhi, was riding without a licence and not wearing a helmet.

Police said he too suffered injuries and was undergoing treatment. Police said a suo motu case has been registered, and he will be arrested once discharged from hospital.

Following the accident, police launched a special drive against underage bikers in New Town. On Monday, 18 motorcycles being ridden by minors were seized. Police said parents of the underage riders will also be prosecuted.

This is the second incident in a week in which a cyclist was killed in New Town. On Sept 15, another cyclist was hit by a motorcycle carrying three riders, none of whom was wearing helmets. Earlier, on Sept 2, an elderly pedestrian died after being struck by a bike near Biswa Bangla Gate, while on Sept 4, an IT professional was killed when his scooter collided with a govt bus.
