Anubrata inspects preparations for family Durga Puja

The ancestral house of Anubrata Mondal in Hatserandi village, Birbhum district, is receiving a fresh coat of paint ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja festival. The celebrations were held in 2022 and 2023 in Mondal’s absence. Although he was released from Tihar Jail in New Delhi before last year’s Puja and briefly attended his family celebrations in Hatserandi, he stayed for only a few hours on a couple of days.
This year, however, Mondal plans to remain for all four days and actively participate in the festivities. About a year after his release from jail, he is gradually resuming his political activities and was recently elevated to the post of convener of the core committee, a position previously held by the deputy speaker of the state Assembly, Dr Ashish Banerjee.
His daughter, Sukanya Mondal, will accompany him during the four-day festival. Today, Anubrata Mondal visited his native village to oversee the final preparations for the Puja.
Mondal has been provided with Y-category security cover by the West Bengal Police. Before his arrest by the CBI and later by the ED in connection with the cross-border cattle smuggling case, he used to organise his family’s Durga Puja with great pomp and grandeur, feeding thousands of devotees with prasad each day. A few political leaders are also expected to join the celebrations this year.
“I will not stay overnight but will return to my house at Nichupatti, Bolpur, in the evenings. I spent my entire childhood in Hatserandi village and I miss those golden days. So many relatives, friends and villagers gather here for the Puja, and I enjoy spending time with them. Back in Bolpur, I am always busy with party work. Next year we have to fight the Assembly polls and win all the seats, so this year’s Durga Puja is very important for all of us,” he told the media today.
Recently, at a meeting with the Birbhum district leadership, Abhishek Banerjee set a target to win all the seats and instructed party members to put an end to factional feuds.
