Tension flared outside the Barasat court complex in North 24-Parganas on Tuesday afternoon, after a clash broke out between a group of lawyers and police, leaving a policeman and several journalists injured. The incident occurred when two men, accused of assaulting lawyers earlier this week, were brought to court. A section of lawyers had been staging protests outside the premises since morning, demanding strict action. When the accused were produced in court, the demonstration turned unruly. Police said the situation escalated when officers attempted to disperse the protesting lawyers. The confrontation quickly spiralled into pushing and shoving, which led to a scuffle.
A police officer sustained serious facial injuries, with witnesses saying his face was bleeding heavily. Several journalists covering the incident were also injured in the melee. As reinforcements arrived to bring the situation under control, the standoff only grew more heated. Protesters allegedly hurled stones and bricks at police and vandalised several vehicles parked nearby.
Security personnel were later deployed in large numbers to restore order around the court complex. The incident began on Monday evening. Dulal Sarkar, a lawyer at the Barasat court, was travelling with his family in a car along Taki Road toward Duttapukur. After crossing Kazipara, their vehicle stopped at a petrol pump near Bamangachhi to refuel.
Allegedly, an argument broke out with a group of men, who then attacked the lawyer and his relatives. The injured were admitted to Barasat Government Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Following the attack, the lawyers lodged a complaint at Duttapukur police station.
Police launched an investigation and arrested three men in connection with the incident. On Tuesday, the accused were produced before the Barasat court, where the judge ordered seven days of police custody based on the police’s request. According to reports, tensions escalated in the afternoon when some lawyers tried to assault the accused while they were being taken to the prison van. Barasat police station’s assistant sub-inspector Supriya Bhadra attempted to bring the situation under control but became the target of the lawyers’ anger. He was attacked and received injuries on his face. A senior police officer condemned the attack on law enforcement officers, saying: “If there is an assault on police, strict legal steps must be taken. The accused should be booked under non-bailable charges, not under softer provisions.”
The confrontation has already triggered a political war of words. BJP leader Sajal Ghosh accused the state police of failing to act impartially. “The police
