  • Kolkata: A study by city cops, with help of police in other metros, has revealed that Kolkata is the least accident-prone city among all metros in the country. The findings have been made a part of the annual traffic report for 2024 that was released on Monday.

According to this report, other major cities like Delhi and Mumbai have significantly higher numbers of accidents, injuries, and fatalities. According to Lalbazar sources, when compared with five other major cities in the country, Delhi ranks first in terms of road accidents. Last year, Kolkata recorded 188 road accidents resulting in 191 deaths. In contrast, Delhi had 1,504 road accidents with 1,551 fatalities.

Following Delhi is Bengaluru with 869 accidents and 894 deaths last year; Chennai had 534 accidents with 544 deaths; Mumbai had 384 accidents with 370 deaths; Hyderabad had 286 accidents resulting in 301 deaths. The statistics for injuries in road accidents are similar. In Kolkata, 1,754 non-fatal accidents led to 1,724 injuries while 5,224 people were injured in 4,153 accidents in Delhi. In Bengaluru, 4,022 were injured in 3,900 accidents; Chennai recorded 3,888 injuries in 3,233 accidents, Mumbai had 2,723 injuries in 2,256 accidents, and Hyderabad had 3,393 injuries in 3,499 accidents.

In absence of NCRB data, the tallying of statistics is a method to measure success of preventive initiatives, said Lalbazar cops. "We are also using the total road area under watch and density of population," said an officer.

According to Lalbazar statistics, among the 191 fatalities in city accidents last year, 79 were pedestrians. Of the rest, 75 people died in bike and scooter accidents, including 54 riders and 21 passengers.

The number of fatalities was higher during the monsoon due to slippery and poor road conditions.

A traffic official stated that since the launch of the state govt's ‘Safe Drive Save Life' initiative, and its campaigns in every district, awareness regarding

among residents of Kolkata and the state has increased significantly. The use of technology has also helped cops cut down on accidents.
