  • Kolkata: Priyanshu Singh (21), a second-year BCom student, and Shivangshu Singh (17), a class XII student at Kalighat High School, have been braving poverty for decades, trying to shape a better future in this city.

Their father, Jitendra Singh (61), a driver by profession, always told them that they needed to land respectable jobs. "He told me and my mother, Meera, not to worry…he said he would cover my back," said Priyanshu.

However, both brothers are now in a fix. Just like the eight other families who lost their main breadwinner in the city after they got electrocuted on Tuesday after the deluge, their father's death has plunged their future in darkness.

The Singh family has left for Siwan in Bihar, their ancestral home. They will decide to return to the city after finishing the final rites.

"We have seen Singh work overtime. He loved Durga Puja, and he even bought gifts for his boys. While his sons will return to finish their father's dream, the city will never be the same again," said a neighbour at Hossain Shah Road in Mominpore. According to the deceased's family, Singh was electrocuted while going from his room to the bathroom.

The family claimed that CESC was responsible because if they cut off the power when the street was flooded, this incident would not have occurred.

A few kilometres away, Sandip Guhathakurta (60) stayed alone in a room at Ballygunge Place in order to support his extended family. His elder sister was his companion. On Thursday, the house remained locked. "We have seen him keeping to himself and his work. He was sending money back home. It is unfortunate that he died after barely stepping out of the house," said his immediate neighbour.

Mayor Firhad Hakim said, "CM Mamata Banerjee has given a directive. We, as representatives, are to stand by the families where such incidents have occurred, and citizens have left us.I told the family that as a brother, I am here for them."
