Water recedes, new craters surface on repaired roads

Kolkata: The 30-hour waterlogging after the seven-hour torrential downpour has again battered freshly repaired roads. As the storm water receded, craters surfaced on various stretches in the city.
A survey by the KMC roads repair gangs at the borough level found the surface of several roads had simply worn off after the standing water penetrated the asphalt surface.
KMC roads department's plans to carry out urgent repairs received a setback on Thursday evening following a fresh spell of rain. With the Met department signalling more rain, finding a dry spell to undertake the repairs may prove a challenge.
A civic roads department official said though 300 stretches had been repaired over the past fortnight, a fresh drive was again needed to ensure smooth traffic during pujas.
"We have made a borough-wise list of roads that have developed craters afresh. Our priority will be roads leading to big pandals," he said.
A TOI team on Thursday toured the city and found several major roads springing potholes, Suhrawardy Avenue, APC Roy Road and Diamond Harbour Road being among the worst affected. Suhrawardy Avenue had just received a pre-puja facelift. The Maniktala Market crossing with APC Roy Road, which has sprung fresh craters, underwent patchwork repairs a week ago.
DH Road has been a challenge due to metro work at Mominpore and Kidderpore. The rain has added to motorists' woes. Police have barricaded gaping holes, some measuring 3ft-6ft in diameter. "The 1.5-km stretch took more than half-an-hour to cross as our driver struggled to negotiate potholes," said Ramen Mondal, a Behala resident.
Police put up guard rails around craters on Hazra Road, Alipore Road and Burdwan Road.
