BJP, monks protest attacks on Durga idols in Bangladesh

A series of attacks on Hindu idols and pandals in Bangladesh by irate mobs ahead of the Durga Puja festival has triggered concern in West Bengal, with political parties like BJP, monks and Hindu organisations staging a protest outside the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata on yesterday afternoon.
According to reports from across Bangladesh, a number of Durga idols being cast and several under-construction Puja pandals have been vandalised by groups of miscreants in recent days. The most severe attack occurred in Kashimpur, where a pandal and idols were completely destroyed.
State BJP leaders expressed alarm, saying the incidents again raised questions about the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh. Avijit Das, a state BJP leader, said he had taken up the issue with India’s ministry of external affairs. “Seventy per cent of Hindus in West Bengal feel unsafe,” he claimed. “One can imagine the condition of minorities in Bangladesh.”
Das added, “I will also write to the Bangladesh deputy high commissioner demanding immediate action. We are especially worried about the immersion processions on Vijaya Dashami, when thousands of devotees take out rallies across Bangladesh. We urge the deputy high commission to engage with their government on this matter at once.”
Monks from different akharas (monastic centres) and several Hindu groups gathered in front of the mission on Circus Avenue. The protest was led by Swami Paramatmananda Bhairav, Mahamandaleshwar (head) of the Sri Panchayati Akhara, Mahanirvani, alongside Swami Shuddhgunatmananda Mahamandaleswar of the Juna Akhara. “This type of vandalism spreads fear during festival time all over Bangladesh,” Paramatmananda said.
“We appeal to the Bangladesh administration to ensure Hindus can celebrate Durga Puja without fear. Minorities live under constant threat there, and during the main festival, the government must take extra care and provide protection. We requested the Bangladesh deputy high commission for deploying adequate security to avert further incidents.”
The demonstrators also submitted a memorandum to mission officials listing their demands.
A large Kolkata Police contingent was deployed outside the Deputy High Commission, and continued today, even though the demonstration ended peacefully.
