NEW DELHI: The Calcutta High Court on Friday granted bail to former West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee in connection with the teacher recruitment irregularities case.
The bench of Justice Suvra Ghosh ordered Chatterjee to surrender his passport and remain within the jurisdiction of the trial court as conditions for his bail.
The court also directed that the former minister, a Trinamool Congress MLA, not hold any public office during the pendency of the trial.
Chatterjee has been accused of involvement in a racket that facilitated illegal appointments of unqualified candidates to positions such as primary school teachers, assistant school teachers, and other posts in the education department.
The matter came to light after several unsuccessful candidates in the teachers’ eligibility test conducted by the West Bengal Board of Primary Education approached the Calcutta High Court. The court subsequently ordered a CBI probe on June 8, 2022.
Following the order, the CBI registered an FIR the next day, and the Enforcement Directorate filed a case on June 24, 2022, against several officials of the state education department.
