  • Rampurhat police on Friday filed a charge sheet in just 10 days against the main accused in the rape and murder of a Class VIII tribal girl. The charge sheet was placed before the Rampurhat Sub-Divisional Court, which fixed a date for framing of charges.

The 13-year-old had gone missing on 28 August after leaving for private tuition. On 16 September, police recovered decomposed body parts from a waterbody near a forest, though not all remains could be traced despite the use of sniffer dogs.

The accused, Manoj Kumar Pal, a physical science teacher at the girl’s school, has confessed to the crime. Police said the accused slit her throat, drained blood, and cut the body into pieces before cleaning the crime scene with chemicals. He was produced in court under tight security after nine days in custody and was remanded to judicial custody.

Police said Pal tried to erase evidence inspired by crime sequences in Bollywood and Hollywood films. Birbhum SP Amandeep personally monitored the investigation.

Former PCC president Adhir Ranjan Choudhury and deputy speaker Dr Ashish Banerjee visited the victim’s family and assured support.

Villagers also assaulted the school’s headmaster, alleging negligence, before he was rescued by police.
