  • Three people were killed and three others seriously injured in a road accident on Friday night while members of the Barwari Durga Puja Committee of Shankarbati village in Polba were transporting their Durga idol to the puja pandal.

The idol was being carried from Chandannagar Patuya Para on a four-wheeled mechanised van, with six committee members following in a separate car. As both vehicles were crossing the Chandannagar rail flyover, the car carrying the six committee members lost control and crashed into the wayside wall.

Two people died on the spot. Four others, rescued by police with serious injuries, were rushed to Chinsurah Imambara Hospital. One of them succumbed to his injuries there, while another was later shifted to SSKM Hospital. The remaining two are undergoing treatment at Chinsurah Hospital.

The deceased have been identified as Bhaskar Devdhara (29) of Shankarbati, Sugandha; Pritam Chakraborty (30); and Swapan De (40) of Kantapukur, Chandannagar.

On receiving information about the accident, officers from Chandannagar and Polba police stations arrived promptly and carried out rescue operations.

Police stated that all the puja committee members travelling in the ill-fated car were in an inebriated state. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

The tragic incident has cast a pall of mourning over Shankarbati village.
