Six workers of Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) fell ill today following a toxic gas leak from a blast furnace, with two reported to be in a critical condition.
Panic gripped the raw materials handling plant around 11.30 a.m. when several workers inhaled the poisonous gas. According to officials, Ujjawal Hanri and Tapas Mondal are in a critical state, having inhaled a substantial amount of the gas. Both are under strict medical supervision in the Critical Care Unit of the DSP Main Hospital.
Blast furnace gas is a by-product of the iron-making process. It mainly comprises carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, with over 50 per cent nitrogen and only 5 to 10 per cent hydrogen.
DSP has previously recorded four deaths between 26 September 2018 and 12 April 2021 due to toxic gas leaks. In light of recurring fatal incidents at DSP and at the SAIL Refractory Unit in Ranchi, the 2022 Rajya Sabha report stated that factory inspectors had recommended strict enforcement of the provisions of the Factories Act, 1948.
