Kolkata: Hundreds of homes were damaged, numerous trees and electric poles uprooted, and at least 12 people were injured after a tornado-like storm hit the Sandeshkhali block in North 24 Parganas on Thursday evening.
Locals said the storm was abrupt and they had little time to take preparatory measures. Several villages have lost power. Disaster management teams have been deployed and efforts are on to restore power and provide relief to affected families.
The regional meteorological centre had previously warned of heavy rain due to a deep depression for three days. But the weather system could not fully develop, as a result of which a tornado-like storm hit Sandeshkhali.
"The tornado-like storm struck Patharghata under Agarhati gram panchayat in Sandeshkhali block-I, where more than a hundred houses were left in ruins," said a senior district administration official. Sandeshkhali MLA Sukumar Mahato and block development officer Sayantan Sen visited the affected areas following the disaster.
Mahato assured affected families that arrangements would be made to relocate affected residents. He further said work had begun to assess the extent of damage and provide suitable compensation.
